Who We Are
Small Hands Homestead is run by Ali Appel and was created to bring the beauty and creativity of a farm to those in the area who don't have access to it whether it be on the farm or at market. She has loved growing flowers since she was young, helping her mother in the garden. From there she went to Valparaiso University and graduated with a degree in Geography knowing she wanted to work outside in nature. Ali then worked at the IN Dunes National Lakeshore followed by Native Roots Farm. She learned how to run a small farm, grow a variety of vegetables, flowers, and mushrooms. She was able to work with homeschool groups and preschool groups that came out for farm visits. She has extensive experience at Farmer's Markets and working with the community.
Other areas of interest for Ali are Figure Skating, she runs the Learn to Skate program at the Central Park Plaza Ice Rink in Valparaiso. She has taught skating lessons, both group and private, for the past 7 years and has experience working with kids ages 3-18. She also completed her 200 hour Yoga Teacher Training in 2015 and has been teaching yoga since then.
Her hobbies are fermenting and canning foods, baking with sourdough, knitting in the winter, growing food and flowers (something new every year!), and learning more about sustainable living. She looks forward to engaging with the community through beautiful flowers and exploration out in nature.
